Happy Mother's Day!

On my first official Mother's Day, I just want to thank the lovely lady who made it all possible.

When I was little,
and you tried teaching me something,
and I complained,
and you said, "You'll thank me later,"
you were so right.

Thank you Mom! Thank you for raising me. I am only beginning to get an idea of how much work that must have been. Thank you for teaching me to sew. I'm sorry for being so darn stubborn, and I'm glad some of it sunk in. Thank you for teaching me how to cook, and clean, and do laundry. I still kind of hate doing all those things, but I'm so glad you taught me how to do them. Thank you for teaching me to try new things, and for doing crazy new things with me. For being my golf buddy, my Costa Rica buddy and my gym buddy. Thank you for making me a better person, a harder-working person, a smarter person, and a stronger person. Thank you for helping me survive being a mom. Because it truly is the hardest thing I've ever done, and I can't imagine how I'd get through it without you. Love you!

Our bright-eyed girl!

Last Saturday, my fabulous cousin Jamie took some great pictures of Eilly for us. It was not an easy task, but the photos turned out so beautiful and fun. Many people have remarked on our kidlet's bright eyes, and Jamie did a great job of capturing them. Here are a few of my favorite faces of Eilly:









We were ultimately trying to get a picture of Eilly in the beautiful Easter dress my mom bought her. Unfortunately, a shot of smiling Eilly sitting perfectly in her fancy dress while squeezing her Easter bunny was not in the cards, but I think I like this one better anyway.



Poor Eilly's mood started going downhill pretty quickly. I dragged her to the Great Cloth Diaper Change that morning to help set the record for the number of cloth diapers changed simultaneously (6,277!), so she was in dire need of a nap. We went to great lengths to try to improve her disposition. Garrett provided the musical entertainment, and we all tried our darnedest to coax out a smile.







When all attempts failed, we contented ourselves with some peaceful pacifier pictures.





Trying to capture just a few more pacifier-free photos, I tried to stealthily snatch the pacifier out while Jamie snapped away. Needless to say, it didn't work. But I love her sad faces too.







Then it was definitely time for a nap. Even though our little photo shoot did not go quite as well as we had planned, I love the range of faces we were able to capture. There are so many little faces she makes, and I don't want to forget a single one. Thanks so much to Jamie and Angie for their quick photo snapping, silly song singing, and all-around amazing baby-cheering-up skills. Love you ladies!

Eilly's Blessing

*This one was also unfinished, but I thought I'd better finish it! Mostly because I love how her cute outfit turned out.




Here are a couple pictures of Eilly in her lovely blessing outfit. It was so great having our families there to celebrate with us. I know Eilly won't remember it, but I sure will. I love how her blessing outfit turned out. I made it before she was born, so I needed something that would work well for a boy or a girl. I spent hours designing the perfect pattern and knitting it. I'm so glad it turned out so well. Then after she was born, I knit her a bonnet to go with it. It was so much work, I hope we can bless all our kids in it, though Garrett pointed out to me that merino wool is probably not a good idea if we have any summer babies. I told him they have air conditioning in the chapel. :)

When the baby cries, when my arms sting, these are a few of my favorite things!

*Just to prove I have been writing, here is this unfinished post I started a million years ago. Alas, it has no pictures which is why it remained unfinished, but I threw in some stock photos so you can at least see what I'm talking about.*

While I have a few minutes, I just wanted to post about some of my favorite baby things that have turned out to be so useful with a new baby.




First up, I love our Boppy! Garrett's awesome work threw him a baby shower, and one of the super awesome things they gave us was a Boppy. I made a cover for it using a tutorial online, because really, who wants to spend $20 on a cover? This has been so great for nursing, sitting up and tummy time. Awesome!



Next favorite thing is the Woombie. Now it looks a little scary, like a baby straitjacket, but it is a lifesaver. Eilly loves being swaddled, but her little arms are just too good at breaking out. I bought one while I was pregnant, and the first night home from the hospital we decided to use it because she kept wiggling out of the swaddle and waking up. We loved it so much that the next day Garrett went out and bought another one from someone on ksl so we'd have two. I also love how easy it is to feed her in the middle of the night in it. No flailing arm battles!



I also love, love, LOVE my super wide ring sling from Babyette. It is beautiful, and so easy to use with a little baby. We didn't buy an infant carrier carseat, just a convertible carseat, so whenever we go somewhere I just pop her in the sling. Works like a charm! And definitely great for when my arms start to get tired.



My other most favorite thing is the huge exercise ball we have sitting in our bedroom. I move it around the house with me and Mom has one upstairs so that Eilly and I can bounce wherever we go. Eilly is not a fan of the rocking chair, but she loves it when I sit on the exercise ball while I hold her and bounce. She calms down really fast.

That is all I can think of right now, and I'm sure my list will change as she gets older. I omitted talking forever about my absolute favorite cloth diapers. Those definitely deserve a post of their own.

Introducing Eilly!

Our sweet baby finally decided to make her appearance a week and a half ago. She was exactly one week overdue, and I was beginning to feel like I was going to be pregnant forever! Then, I woke up at 6am on Saturday morning feeling very uncomfortable. I had this yucky ache in my lower back. I had Garrett rub my back for a minute, then I'd feel better, and then a couple minutes later it would start all over again. Think I was in labor? Garrett didn't. He went back to sleep. I hung out on the couch, watching TV, not at all freaked that my contractions were only three minutes apart.

At seven, my mom came down and she was a little more concerned than I was. She woke Garrett up, let him know I was in labor, and said I should get ready to go to the hospital. I decided to take a nice long shower, do my hair and basically drag my feet as much as possible because I wasn't very excited about going to the hospital.

We finally got to the hospital around 10:30am. I was feeling pretty relaxed even though my contractions felt much stronger because I was listening to my hypnobabies cds. The nurse said I was only a 3 or a 4, but they wouldn't send me home because I was a week overdue.

After that, everything went pretty quickly. I spent some time on the birthing ball, and some time in the tub. Then my fabulous, amazing midwife showed up and pulled me out of the tub to see how I was doing. I was a 7, and about 15 minutes later, I was a 10. My mom, sister and Garrett were all great supports, literally (they were each hanging on to a limb) and figuratively.



The kidlet was finally born at about 3:15pm. Garrett got to catch the baby, and we had all decided beforehand that Garrett was the only one who was allowed to announce the sex. After he handed the baby up to me, he was so choked up, he barely managed to whisper "It's a girl!" It was very sweet. After looking at her cute little face, we decided to name her Eilly Lorraine. Eilly (pronounced "eye-lee") is a cute Irish name that Garrett picked out. And we named her Lorraine after my mom.



We've had a pretty exhausting, pretty great week and a half at home with little Eilly. Sadly, we've had to miss out on Thanksgiving dinner this year, as I am home sick with a terrific case of mastitis. I hope I recover quickly because Garrett will be going back to work on Monday. He's been such a great dad! Honestly, I have not yet changed a single diaper, and now that I've been ordered to stay in bed, he's been great at taking care of everything. Even though we had to miss Thanksgiving dinner, I'm really grateful that I at least got to spend it with the two people I am most thankful for.

So busy!

As we get closer and closer to D-day (Delivery Day!), I can't help but think that I should be getting less busy instead of busier. I started an internship this month which I plan to work at right up until D-day. Every day when I come home, my feet look like hobbit feet. Not hairy, but puffy and fat. I prop them up and hope that they'll have time to return to normal before I have to put my shoes on the next day. And I thank my lucky stars that my mom magically makes dinner appear each night because she knows I am just too darn exhausted and uncomfortable to cook. After dinner, I listen to my Hypnobabies CD to get ready for D-day, and then fall fast asleep. Garrett usually manages to wake me up for a few minutes when he gets home, so I at least get to see him. Then I fall back asleep and get to start a whole new day.

But, as exhausted as I am, I really love having such a great internship that keeps my mind focused on helping others rather than dwelling on how uncomfortable I may feel. I keep begging the baby to stay in there as long as possible so I can spend more time working. That may sound a little crazy, but I really do love the work that I do. And I feel very grateful to have a family that is so supportive of me.

Sharing this experience with my family has really been the main thing that has kept this last trimester fun. I love that when I tell Lanna that she has to slow down to a "pregnant lady waddle," she holds my hand and waddles with me. I loved having my aunt, who has no children of her own, feel the baby move and think that was the most awesome experience. I even recorded my grandma singing and reciting a poem for the baby to listen to in utero. As I waddle my way down the home stretch and try to enjoy the journey, I feel so comforted knowing that this baby will be well-loved.

The Baby's Dresser!

Early in my pregnancy, my sister sent me a link to one of her friend's blogs who had refinished an old dresser for her nursery. I was inspired and spent months scouring ads on ksl for the perfect baby dresser. After months of searching, I was worried that we wouldn't be able to find one that was just right and in our price range (cheap!), but we did! We picked up this beauty for $30.


And we (with the amazing help of my awesome family!) transformed it into the most beautiful, most perfect baby dresser ever!

It turned out so great, it is really making me wish we had a nursery to put it in. Until we do have a nursery, it and the baby will be in our room, and I can gaze lovingly at it whenever I want.

On Nesting...

I am generally not a huge planner, and I don't tend to worry too much about future events, particularly those that I can't control. But holy moly, pregnancy hormones are kicking in! Every now and then, I find myself feeling really stressed about having things ready for the baby. It's ridiculous because I still have plenty of time left, but I am starting to feel this drive to get things done. Garrett and I have been going full steam ahead on our baby dresser refinishing project (halfway done!), and we even set up the Pack n' Play bassinet in our bedroom. Garrett's been great at humoring me because really, who needs a bassinet set up at 27 weeks? Me, apparently, and fortunately Garrett's willing to do it for me just so I can rest a little easier at night. Sometimes I think I'm going a little crazy... and sometimes Garrett agrees.

P.S. Speaking of Pack n' Plays, Garrett really hates the phrase "Pack n' Play." Don't ask me why because I totally don't get it. Anyway, the entire time we were setting it up and even now, he's decided that our new word for the Pack n' Play is Marv. Yes, Marv is all set up in our bedroom. Sometimes I think Garrett's a little crazy too.

Great deals on baby stuff

So, now that the bar exam is over, I've been doing a lot of sleeping, cleaning, job searching and baby stuff. Because the baby stuff is by far the most fun, I wanted to tell you all about a couple of my very favorite baby deals websites.

The first is Babysteals.com. This website posts one deal a day (like woot) on really cute baby stuff. I've bought things from them in the past for baby shower gifts, and now that I'm expecting my own baby soon, it's been very difficult waiting until after baby showers to buy some of these cute things. If you miss a day and they haven't sold out, you can always buy past steals on their archive page. And for those of you with older kids or who love scrapbooking, they also have Kidsteals.com and Scrapbooksteals.com. The really dangerous thing about these great websites is that their warehouse is in Salt Lake, so you can choose local pick-up and not have to pay any shipping! My favorite steal that they've had so far are my diapers. As many of you know, Garrett and I will be using gDiapers to cloth diaper our baby. While I certainly don't have all the diapers I'll be needing, I was able to snag some at a great price thanks to Babysteals!


My other favorite website is Mamabargains.com. Much like Babysteals, Mamabargains has one deal listed on their page at a time, but unlike Babysteals, as soon as that deal sells out, they put up a new deal (like a woot-off all the time!). The age ranges for the deals on this page vary quite a bit, so you can find both kid and baby stuff as well as the occasional maternity/nursing stuff. Lanna is the proud owner of a fabulous pair of red hightops we bought from this website. She loves them so much, she wears them every day. And my very favorite deal from Mamabargains is the one really big baby purchase we've made, a stroller! We bought a beautiful Easywalker QTRO stroller, complete with the carry cot, from Mamabargains for $325. That's half off the retail price of $650. And because Mamabargains also has their warehouse located in Salt Lake, we didn't have to pay for shipping. This stroller is super nice, has all the features I could ever want and looks really cozy. So cozy that we have to keep kicking the cat out of the carry cot.And finally, I also wanted to mention Greenbabybargains.com. Like Babysteals, they have one deal a day, but unlike Babysteals, their featured items are always environmentally friendly. I haven't yet bought anything from them, but they have also had some really cute stuff. Unfortunately, they don't have a warehouse in Salt Lake, so no local pick-up. :(

With such fun bargain sites, it really is a wonder I don't have all the baby stuff anyone could ever need, but I keep telling myself I have to wait until after baby showers. Hopefully the weeks go by fast because baby things are just so darn cute! It makes me really glad that we chose not to find out the sex of the baby because then I'm not tempted by all the gender specific stuff.

Chickens and Farmers

If any of you Bountiful-dwellers haven't been to the farmers' market this year, GO! I just got back, and I loved it. I remember the first time I went to the Bountiful Farmers' Market with my grandma. It was in a parking lot, there were only a handful of vendors and they all sold produce. Each year it seems to get bigger and bigger. Now it's held at the U of U Bountiful extension (or Stoker Elementary for you native Bountiful folks), and it is awesome. There were so many people there even though it was really hot (though that might have just been me), and there were a lot of vendors. They sold eggs, beef, strawberries, melons, corn, gourds, greens, onions, beets, honey, popcorn, bread, cheese, preserves, a lot of beautiful crafts and jewelry, Scentsy, essential oils, homemade goat soap, plants and lots of yummy food (funnel cakes, tamales, and so much more). I brought home a bag full of yummy things! I love buying things from local growers. Their food is higher quality than the grocery store, can be cheaper than the grocery store and is often much healthier than the grocery store. If you want pesticide-free food, or free range chicken eggs, or really fresh (rather than artificially ripened) produce, this is the place to find it.

Speaking of free range chicken eggs, last weekend Heather and I dragged our husbands to Salt Lake's Tour de Coops to tour a bunch of urban backyard chicken coops. There were lots of coops that we liked, but these two pictures are of our very favorite. We loved this backyard. It wasn't large, it was shady and verdant, and it had a seriously good looking chicken coop. It was the kind of backyard we would both LOVE to have. Some of you might think we're a little nuts for wanting to keep chickens when we get a house, especially when eggs are so cheap at the grocery store. One big reason to me is that they taste so much better than the ones at the store. Last summer I bought a carton of free range eggs from the farmers' market at the U. On the label, it said that the eggs were from "galavanting chickens." When I was watching Lanna that night, I asked her if she wanted a galavanting chicken egg. She loved it and said it tasted really good. When I told her that Heather and I were going to look at chickens, she said we should get galavanting chickens. She thinks galavanting chickens are a particular breed of chicken that make really good eggs, when really they're just happy, normal chickens.

As you can see from the pictures, chickens are fairly easy to care for. They don't take up a lot of room, they don't make a lot of noise (excluding roosters, of course), and are a great way to teach kids about responsibility, self sufficiency and where their food comes from. One common misconception is that you need a rooster and a hen to get eggs. This isn't true. You do need a hen and a rooster to get a chick, but the eggs that you eat for breakfast are unfertilized eggs. The hens lay them all by themselves without any roosters. Backyard chickens have been growing in popularity, and several nearby cities passed ordinances allowing chickens (though generally NOT roosters). Here's a great article from the U's Daily Chronicle (a.k.a. The Chrony) on urban chickens. I can't wait to have my own backyard so I can have my very own mini flock of galavanting chickens.

Father's Day

This month Garrett officially qualified for celebrating Father's Day. Although I've always bought Garrett a present for Father's Day as the Future Father of our children, I usually did it just because I love any excuse to surprise Garrett with a present. This year he has graduated to Expectant Father, so I decided to surprise him with something to prepare him for that role (along with the dvds I bought him). During our usually one-sided discussions about baby gear (I bet you can guess who does most of the talking), Garrett mentioned that he didn't like the Moby wraps or sling carriers because they look too "girlie." So I showed him a slew of other baby carriers, and he decided he liked the Beco in Panthers the best as a more manly but still fun baby carrier. Before Father's Day, he really enjoyed holding my cousin's little baby, and when I asked him what he was most excited to do with our baby, he said he couldn't wait to hold the baby. That was just so darn cute! So I bought him his beloved baby carrier. He's going to be such a great dad, and I can't wait for him to be able to use his present. I wish I had a picture of Garrett wearing it with one of Lanna's baby dolls in it, but I still haven't unpacked our camera so you'll have to enjoy the stock photo.

It's a BABY!

Today I had my ultrasound! I don't know what I expected to see in there, but I was completely surprised to see a baby. Last night I was thinking about all the possible horrible things they could see on the ultrasound. Maybe the baby would be missing the top of its head, or have pterodactyl wings, or be some sort of weird misshapen lump. I know those are all pretty ridiculous, but I was so relieved and surprised to see this cute busy baby in there. We have officially dubbed the baby "Bob Baby" while it is still in utero. Bob Baby was rolling around and stretching and playing with its hands and knees. It was so surreal! I am so excited.

Just to put your minds at ease (or to drive you crazy), Garrett and I did not find out the gender. We are keeping it a surprise; though if you are really intent on trying to find out, we do have the ultrasound on videotape. Back in Bountiful

Where the people are nice and the mailmen are just a little too helpful! I've really been enjoying living back at my mom's house. My mom and I get to hang out in the evenings, and Mom's a great gym buddy. But there is one hugely annoying problem with being back in Bountiful... the mailman keeps delivering our mail to the wrong places!

As most of you know, I married my neighbor. My mom's house and Garrett's parents' house were on the same street, two houses apart. When we lived at my mom's house the first time, the mailman always delivered our mail to my in-laws house. Rather than delivering the mail to the address on the package, he would always take to my in-laws because we have the same last name.

This time the process has become much more complicated. In the past couple years several things happened: Garrett's brother and his family moved in with my mother and father-in-law, then my mother and father-in-law moved into a new house and Garrett's brother and his wife moved into another home in Bountiful. Confused yet? So was the post office. Now they are delivering our mail to Garrett's brother's house! Garrett called the post office, and I hope we don't have any more problems, but I wouldn't count on it.

The mailman wasn't the only one who messed up though. I'm sure you can imagine the expression on my face when I pulled this movie out of the package:

Mom and I thought it was pretty funny to tease Garrett about his secret love of cheesy romance novel movies. Here's the movie Garrett ordered:

If you haven't seen this movie, I would definitely recommend it. It was really freaky!

On all our recent exciting news...

First, I wanted to tell you all the cute stories about telling our families that I'm pregnant. The best reaction was Garrett's. When we did the test, Garrett and I sat in the living room and waited for the timer to go off. When the timer beeped, Garrett ran into the bathroom and grabbed the test before I could see it. He wanted to be the very first to know. Then he read it and a huge smile started spreading across his face. He turned it around so I could read it, and I gave him a great big hug. Then I made him hold still so I could take a picture. It was very cute.

For the future grandparents, I made them all small accordion scrapbooks. They said "In a little while, just a little while, Garrett and Sarah will be one, two, three!" And on the last page there was a picture of the pregnancy test, and "Baby Box coming November 2010!" My mom was the first to get hers. We slipped it into her Easter basket. Even though I was only 9 weeks, she definitely had some suspicions. When she read the book, she said "I knew it!" She and Lanna were both really excited. The next week we gave my Dad his book. His reaction was pretty funny. He was happy, but more shocked at the idea of being a grandpa. Then we gave Garrett's parents their book. When Garrett's mom got to the last page, she closed the book and smiled at us. Then my sisters-in-law let out a very excited (but also kind of scary) scream and ran over to hug us. It was a lot of fun. I'm 15 weeks now, and still feeling pretty nauseated. But the baby (who we have temporarily named "Bob Baby") is doing great.

In other exciting news, I graduated last week. Hooray! Law school really seemed to fly by, and I really can't believe I'm finished already. One thing that was really exciting for me was that I finally got to have stripes on my sleeves. When I was little and went to my parents graduations, I loved learning about the different graduation regalia and what it all meant. I knew that I wanted a hood and stripes when I graduated, and last week I got to wear them. It was a great day. Now, Garrett and I are getting ready to move this weekend. That's the downside of graduating; no more cheap student housing. And now I'll have to start paying those student loans, so we'll be moving in with my mom. I hope she's excited about having a little crying baby living in her basement this November.

The cat's out of the bag!

Now that all the future grandparents have been informed, it's time to let all of you in on our good news!


By now you've probably figured out why I haven't posted in a while. I've been too busy being sick and sleepy! As I type this, I'm struggling to keep my eyes open and sipping a Slimfast to quell the nausea (THANK YOU Julie for that awesome suggestion!). Garrett and I are super excited! Baby Box is due to arrive around the first week of November. I'll post some cute stories about telling the families later. For now, I really need some sleep! Good night!

One of my new favorite things!

***The subject of this post is a menstruation product. If that totally grosses you out, stop reading now.***

I hope you are not all freaked out now. Let me explain. I started thinking about menstrual products last summer, when I attended a great relief society meeting on food storage. One thing that was emphasized was that we should not just store food, but should think about the other things we might need in an emergency, i.e. diapers, toilet paper, hygiene products, and menstrual products. The mention of menstrual products concerned me because I knew that if there ever was an emergency, with my luck it would happen during my period. Garrett and I live in an itty bitty apartment, and we don't have a lot of room for our regular food, let alone food storage, but I have at least been working on us having a 72 hour kit and a little food storage. Problem is, boxes of pads or tampons take up a lot of space! And what if I couldn't store enough and ran out?! If there ever were an emergency, the last thing I would want to be worrying about was having enough tampons!

My first thought to solve this problem was to sew some reusable pads. But I was kind of turned off this idea when I started thinking about how much work it would take and envisioned trying to wash them out during an emergency. Gross! Thank goodness I came across the menstrual cup! Most people don't know about cups (I didn't), even though they've been around since the beginning of the 1900s. I think the reason that they are not well known is because disposable pads and tampons have been such big business, while a reusable option does not generate the same kind of huge repeat business. Here is a picture of the brand I chose, the MeLuna:

A menstrual cup is a cup, usually made out of silicone, that you fold and insert basically like a tampon. It holds more than a tampon. You can't feel it when it's in. Most people only have to empty it every 12 hours (awesome!). When you empty it, you rinse it out in the sink, wipe it out with a piece of toilet paper, or (think in a dire emergency situation when you don't want to waste your drinking water) can even pee on it (I know it sounds gross, but we're talking major emergency and pee is sterile) to clean it before you re-insert it. And best of all, you can use the same cup for 10 years! Here's a picture of what one looks like folded:
So instead of packing boxes of tampons, I only have to pack one little cup. That's it! And even though I bought the cup as a back-up, once I started using it, I loved it. I will never use tampons again! Most cups cost between $20 and $40. Although the initial cost seems a little steep, once I added up the amount I could spend on tampons over 10 years, it is definitely worth it. There are several brands. Before choosing one, I suggest checking out this comparison website and this forum. Here is a website that sells many brands (don't be scared b/c it's a UK company, they ship here and there's a button to change all the currency to dollars), and if you decide you like the MeLuna, you can get a slightly better price from the MeLuna website (it's a German website, so click on the little British flag to see the website in English). The MeLuna is one of the cheapest, has great colors, three sizes, and four different types of stem so you can really choose the exact one that you think would work best for you.
I hope I haven't grossed you all out, but this is an item that I really love. It works better than a tampon, is better for the environment, is better for my checkbook, and helps me be more prepared in an emergency. I hope you all check it out!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Garrett and I had a great Valentine's Day this year. Also a very laid back one. Because Valentine's was on a Sunday this year, we kind of spread our Valentine's celebration out over Friday and Saturday. Garrett had to work Friday night, but when he got home from work, he brought me some beautiful flowers and yummy heart-shaped chocolate covered marshmallows. Isn't he sweet? That morning I had a doctor's appointment where I ended up have a mole incised, so I wasn't having the best day (think lots of pain, bleeding and stitches that looked like mutant whiskers on my face). When he got home, I started crying because he totally made my day.

On Saturday, we got up early and celebrated my brother-in-law's birthday at Garrett's parent's house. It was so much fun seeing our cute nieces and nephews! We took a great Valentine's Day nap that afternoon, then Garrett revealed my Valentine's gifts. He bought me this lovely purse (my favorite color!):

My hubby has such good taste! For Garrett's Valentine's present, I chose three seasons of Garrett's favorite tv show, Get Smart. He loves it! We've been watching episodes ever since.
For dinner, we went to one of our favorite casual dinner restaurants, Red Lobster. Their biscuits are so yummy! And Garrett really loves the crab linguini. I love eating pretty much all underwater creatures. Yum! We had such a fun Valentine's day. I'm so glad I've got such a great guy to spend it with.
